Belfast Screening of “We the Owners: Employees Expanding the American Dream”
May 17 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Cooperative Maine Business Alliance presents:
We the Owners: Employees Expanding the American Dream
The compelling story of 3 small businesses’ path to worker ownership, told by the workers themselves. Lives and workplaces are transformed when becoming a cooperative introduces the possibility of a future previously unimaginable.
“Visually beautiful and emotionally compelling, [We the Owners] shows what employee ownership means to real companies and to real people. Employee shareholders tell us in their own words about surmounting the challenges of working in a company whose success is now up to them. It reminds us that property and the hope of acquiring property through work built America and is still the American dream.” –The Kelso Institute
Before the film, there will be a brief panel discussion with 2 employee owned businesses in the region, Rock City Employee Cooperative of Rockland and Allen Insurance and Financial, an employee stock ownership company based in Camden. Hear two local businesses’ stories of their own path to employee ownership and what that has meant to their ability to thrive in Maine.
Midcoast Leadership Academy will share their findings of a region-wide research effort developed in collaboration with Cooperative Maine Business Alliance: “Sustaining and Growing our Employment Strength Through Cooperatives.” Growing attention is being paid to the looming retirement of business owners over the next decade, and the potential loss of jobs and economic activity those businesses provide. As the oldest state in the nation, this threat looms large for Maine in particular. This brief presentation of locally collected data helps tell the story of the scope and scale of this challenge in Midcoast Maine.
