U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders chats with CDI about housing crisis

July 2, 2024

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders visited the North Avenue Cooperative in Burlington, Vermont today to tour the community and meet its resident-owners. During the tour, he stopped to speak with CDI about the housing crisis and how manufactured-home communities that are cooperatively run can help solve this nationwide problem.

The North Avenue Cooperative recently received $500,000 in congressional funding through the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board to use toward sewer and storm water upgrades, thanks to support from CDI’s Water Infrastructure Support Program (WISP). The community of 116 homes became resident-owned in November 2015, when CDI helped the residents negotiate a below-market price for the purchase of the land and helped the new co-op secure a municipal bond issued by the Vermont State Housing Authority.
